In this video, I conduct a short experiment to see if you prefer steady tempo drumming or variable tempo drumming for a sense of calm.a
In a previous video ( https://youtu.be/HE5IFhWXZho ), I experimented with a steady tempo and compared a repetitive rhythm vs a variable rhythm. About half the people preferred the repetitive rhythm and half the variable rhythm. I’m interested to discover where your preference for tempo lies.
In this experiment, I improvise around one of the world’s most common drumming rhythms (3:3:2) at 8 beats-per-second (drumming starts at 3:19). Drumming rhythms at this tempo will entrain (synchronize) your brain to a relaxed, alert state at the low end of the alpha state. This is neurological calm.
In the second improvisation, I play the same rhythms using variable tempos. I start at 8 beats-per-second (bps), slow to about 7.5 bps, speed up to around 8.5 bps, and then return to 8 bps (drumming starts at 4:33).
Please let me know which improvisation you prefer and why.
In a future video, I will show what these two approaches do in a listener’s brain and explain how steady and variable tempos can be used therapeutically.
